A message from Local Government NZ:
We want more Kiwis to get involved. Healthy democracy depends on New Zealanders voting this October in the 2019 local authority elections. It’s about aligning our communities’ views with those of candidates, and supporting candidates as they stand. It’s about people having their say at the October elections and voting for the issues that they care about for their family, business and community.

Council's role
Simply put, Council is here to serve its communities. It has a role to lead and encourage sustainable prosperity and well-being. Council is not in competition. It is not here to make a profit. It is simply here to serve and assist communities to be the most amazing places they can be. We have key roles to play in infrastructure, community facilities, regulations, etc, but we also play an important role in advocating for appropriate activities that encourage overall well-being – in line with our communities aspirations.
More than any other organisation, Council, on a daily basis, impacts on the way we live. From getting rid of our waste and maintaining the roads and footpaths to advocating for District support - the results of the actions taken (or not taken) are experienced by all of us at one time or another (often something we think more about when it comes to paying the rates!)
In a nutshell, Council is in the business of supporting prosperous communities, this includes safe roads, flushing toilets, attracting the 'right' investment, basically supporting the Far North in being an awesome place to live, work, visit and invest!

A few things you may find helpful
Mayor and Councillors 'make up'
Our District has one Mayor and nine Councillors (across three 'wards'). The three wards are Te Hiku, Bay of Islands - Whangaroa and Kaikohe - Hokianga. We also have three Community Boards - you will be asked to vote for your preferred candidate here too. When it comes to decision making during the course of business, each elected member has one vote. Majority vote generally 'rules'.
It is important to emphasis that as elected members we are in a ‘governance’ position - like a Board of Directors, i.e. we are here to make decisions at a policy/strategic level and not at an operational one (that is for the Chief Executive to lead).
Please vote!
Please make the effort to vote, it shows that you are interested and care about what happens in your community. Remembering that Council impacts on our lives daily - whether we like it or not. You have to be on the electoral role to vote - it's easy, phone 0800 36 76 56.
You are also going to be asked to vote for the following:
Northland District Health Board - it has a different style of voting. Details can be found here.
Northland Regional Council (NRC). NRC's key responsibility is the environment. They also oversee economic development. NRC elections often go 'under the radar'. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the candidates and what they stand for. Details here.
