The most important leadership work happens within.
Without doubt, leadership begins within. It’s a self-confidence. A belief in one’s own innate wisdom and ability. Simply put, an inner authority. The concept of self-leadership didn’t really consciously enter my world until my late thirties, when, through a life-changing event, things shifted, and I started viewing life from different perspectives. Since then, I have been in discovery mode, opening my mind and my heart to new experiences and ideas. Through lots of reading, being with people who see the world differently, venturing into unfamiliar territory, and, importantly, learning to really listen to my own inner wisdom. I certainly didn’t grow up seeing myself as a leader. To me, leadership looked like people who managed others, ran organisations, or led communities and countries. Leadership was something out there, attached to roles and positions – often framed in traditionally masculine ways. Through my journey, I have come to accept something quite simple and quite profound: we are the creators of our life experiences, through our beliefs and the choices we make. It’s through our beliefs, i.e., what we believe to be true, that we shape our experiences. How we respond to others' decisions, whether we see ourselves as victims of life’s circumstances or masters of our life journey, is actually up to us. Several times, I have experienced victimhood, along with some very low patches. My negative self-talk got out of control and filled me with doubt and, as I write this, also feeling despair on one or two occasions. Like most of us, I have had my fair share of pain and hurt. Low self-esteem, a couple of traumatic experiences and other incidents that had me briefly wondering if it’s all worth it. While some of the dark stuff can and does take time to heal, I have realised that the only person holding me back is me. It has taken me to this point in my life to understand and accept this. And while I still tell my mind to ‘shut up with the negativity’ on regular occasions, I am much more aware of this and able to manage myself more proactively. This is self-leadership in action. Being self-aware and mindful of what’s going on inside. Our thoughts, our feelings, what’s resonating, what’s not. An example is recognising that you’re feeling the emotion, but you’re not the emotion itself. The emotion is a trigger, drawing attention to something that needs attention. For all the social expectations and norms of the modern world, what matters most is what we hold true for ourselves. This is what I recognise as Inner Authority. Google describes Inner Authority as: ‘Your unique, inherent decision-making compass, particularly within the Human Design system, guiding you to trust your body's wisdom (gut feelings, emotions, intuition) over mental logic or external advice, allowing for aligned choices and authentic self-expression. It's the internal mechanism that tells you when to act, wait, or commit, relying on specific body signals rather than overthinking.’ Self-leadership begins here. Not in having all the answers, but in being able to listen inwardly and trust what’s emerging. In knowing what feels true for you, not because it’s popular or expected, but because it’s grounded in our lived experience. Inner authority shows up in how we listen to ourselves, notice our responses, and choose whether to override or honour what we’re sensing. When our inner authority is shaky, no amount of planning will steady us for long. We second-guess ourselves. We look outward for reassurance or permission. But when it’s strong, we come from a stable and wise inner knowing. We don’t need everything figured out. We’re able to hold uncertainty, make considered choices, and stay aligned even when things are complex or contested. Our leadership becomes quieter, steadier, and more consistent because it’s anchored from the inside. North reminds us that before we lead others, initiatives, or change, we are always leading ourselves. And that leadership, the most important kind, begins within.
