Boundaries are about Clarity - not Control.

Personal reflections on the importance of setting boundaries, self-respect, and learning this one the long way.

For a long time, I struggled with setting clear boundaries. Drawing a line felt uncomfortable. Saying no felt harder than it needed to be.

From this lived experience, I've come to learn that boundaries are really about clarity, about more 'kind and less care'.

Growing up, I came to understand certain things about roles and power - including the idea that men were the head of the house. This belief quietly followed me into adulthood and into my working relationships as well. Add to that an empathic nature and a strong leaning toward servant leadership, and you get someone who was very good at putting others first. Sometimes too good.

In my early days in public office (and before), that showed up as not setting boundaries early - particularly around inappropriate, chauvinistic, or sexualised comments from male colleagues. I didn’t always call it in the moment. I didn’t want to rock the boat, be seen as ‘difficult.’

Over time, the impact of my choices became clear.

I found myself feeling unheard and undervalued at times. I allowed others to speak on my behalf, or to take ownership of ideas that weren’t theirs. For a long time, I justified this by telling myself that if the ideas were used for the good of the whole, that was what mattered.

And while I'm delighted that some of these concepts are still in play today, it doesn’t help much when you’re trying to articulate your contribution, your experience, or your worth. Especially when it comes time to seek new mahi.

One of my biggest learnings is recognising that boundaries are best set early. It’s far easier to gently nip something in the bud than to untangle it once it’s grown roots.

That said, boundaries don’t always need to be loud or confrontational.

For me, they often look like discernment. Choosing my battles. Removing myself from situations that don’t align. Being clear about what I will and won’t give my energy to. During my time in public office, and still now, I’ve also kept a clear line between my public and private life. I value solitude. I need space. That, too, is a boundary.

From someone who is so much better than I used to be at setting boundaries, I'm still aware that I can do better. This is my learning in action.

Boundaries aren’t about shutting people out. They’re about self-respect and self-trust. About knowing ones worth and acting in alignment with it. And while some people may not like a boundary at first, my experience is that clarity often earns respect, even if uncomfortable in the moment.

This reflection sits firmly in the West Compass. West is about weaving strong, mutually beneficial relationships. And healthy boundaries are essential for that. They allow connection without self-erasure.

Most people understand the importance of boundaries in teams and organisations. What’s often missing is the confidence to name them. Which can be helped by knowing there will be people who have your back when do.

West helps us do that - to set limits without shutting down connection.

To stay relational, steady, and self-respecting all at once.

And that, I’m discovering, is a powerful place to lead from.
