A New Compass in a Tumultuous World

What slowing down might feel like, when the world keeps speeding up.

It really does feel like the world is speeding up at a great rate of knots. Certainly from where I’m sitting anyway. (Where did 2025 go?!)

Along with constant change, there's constant input. You know, other people's opinions, expectations, notifications, breaking news, algorithms …. Add nutrient-light meals, feelings of loneliness, and maybe a touch of mental overload, it's no wonder so many feel ungrounded, even when life might look pretty good on paper.

It’s easy to say take a deep breath. I know this can sound really annoying when we’re feeling the pressure to perform. But, yep, it’s exactly the step to take – a moment to recalibrate.

Even better if this can be done in the open air, with our bare feet planted firmly on the earth (check out the science on this). If one wants to get really fancy, consider coherent breathing, where you synchronise breath with heart rate. It’s being shown to calm the nervous system and reduce stress.

I’ve found that when I slow down or, better yet, take a complete break rather than pushing through, I become more productive. My clarity is sharper, and often, the struggle has solved itself. I can be writing, hit a block, go for a walk and while out, a thought pops into my mind and I’m like, a-ha!

Whether it’s focused breathing or any other way of getting out of your head - you know, the constant mind chatter - the aim is to enter your heart space. That stillness at the centre of your being. This is where being in flow sits. The quiet calm, the observer.

It’s the ‘smelling the roses’ that provides space for gentle contemplation and often inspiration follows. Think about the last time you had a decision to make and slept on it. Things are generally always clearer in the morning (preferably not at 2am).

Try setting an intention when you go to sleep to awake with the answer you seek. The secret is to let the thought go once the intention is set.

For me, being in flow state feels really centred and calm. It’s a quiet confidence, where I’m not easily affected by the ‘noise’ around me. It feels strong, safe, empowering. My mind doesn’t feel overwhelmed - I’m balanced, head with heart.

I believe that leadership moving forward won’t be about having more certainty. Other than we can be certain that things will keep changing.

In a world rapidly being shaped by AI, where curiosity, discernment, and critical thinking will matter more than being an information guru, it’s going to be about having a trusted inner reference point.

I call this my Inner Compass.

My Inner Compass doesn’t remove uncertainty. It doesn’t always give me answers, although it often can. What it does do is provide direction - a way to orient myself when the terrain feels unfamiliar or tumultuous. It helps me notice where I am, so I might choose my next step with awareness.

This ‘30 Days of Blogging’ is to reflect and share some of my ongoing learnings, which have helped me become more centred and strong. I see these as the four compass directions:

North: Knowing Self (who am I?)
Identity, values, intuition, inner truth, discernment.

East: Expanding Mind (how do I see the world?)
Perspective, learning, sense-making, future orientation, curiosity.

South: Embodied Ease (how am I in myself right now?)
Body-led presence, nervous system capacity, grounded aliveness, flow.

West: Weaving Connection (how do I relate and contribute?)
Relationship, integration, meaning, belonging, impact with others.

I’m looking forward to delving into each of these areas over the coming weeks. If anything, it’s really helping me fine-tune my own understanding and approach to leading.

I start with North tomorrow, where I’ll be diving into ‘Your Inner North Is a Relationship, not a Destination - a reflection on self-sovereignty and inner authority in an increasingly complex world.’
