A few things you may find helpful
The 2016 Elections closed on the 8th October. Details can be found here.
Mayor and Councillors 'make up'
Our District has one Mayor and nine Councillors (across three 'wards'). The three wards are Te Hiku, Bay of Islands - Whangaroa and Kaikohe - Hokianga. We also have three Community Boards - you will be asked to vote for your preferred candidate here too. When it comes to decision making during the course of business, each elected member has one vote. Majority vote generally 'rules'.
Please vote!
Please make the effort to vote, it shows that you are interested and care about what happens in your community. Remembering that Council impacts on our lives daily - whether we like it or not.
You have to be on the electoral role to vote (0800 36 76 56).
Food for thought...
Rates can seem expensive and they are a little higher on average here in the Far North (big district, smaller population -around 61,200 people). When you look at them on a daily basis however, they do offer value. If your yearly rates account is say $2,000, that calculates to $38.46 a week or $5.50 a day. For this you get access to heaps of things - such as community halls, sports grounds, libraries, reserves and playgrounds. Your rates also go towards footpaths, district roads, public toilets and lighting, dealing with waste, stormwater etc. For those on water or sewerage schemes - you also get peace of mind to be able to turn on the tap and flush the toilet - not having to worry about what happens to it thereafter.
Council is very mindful that rates, which are a tax, can be a real burden - not many people like paying them. We do our best to find a balance in providing safe, durable infrastructure, community facilities, while investing in activities that encourages community prosperity. We are the third biggest district in New Zealand, with 42 communities and approximately 2,500 kilometres of roading (of which 891 kilometres is sealed). We have a rating base of around 33,000 ratepayers. So in a nutshell, we have a small population and a large land mass to manage.
